View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] Lim Dong-gwon, director of Munsan Jeil Eye Clinic, was selected as the grand prize winner of the 38th Boryung Medical Volunteer Award, hosted by the Korean Medical Association, Boryung Holdings, and Boryung Pharmaceutical.
Director Lim was recognized for his dedication to medical volunteer work both domestically and internationally over 22 years. Since beginning volunteer activities at a clinic for foreign workers in 2000, he has performed 57 surgeries in 12 countries and treated over 40,000 patients, dedicating himself to volunteer service.
Director Lim also conducted cataract surgeries and ophthalmology education for 50 patients in North Korea. Even amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which has made overseas volunteer work difficult, he continues active volunteer work in Paju by producing vision correction glasses for children from low-income and grandparent-headed households and providing scholarships.
Director Lim Dong-gwon said, “I am pleased to receive the country’s most prestigious medical volunteer award, which will serve as another motivation for my volunteer work. I will continue to take the lead and work hard wherever I am needed.”
Alongside him, Director Lee Jong-gyu of Uljin Yonsei Family Medicine Clinic, the Africa Future Foundation, and Director Seo Jeong-seong of Ai Eye Clinic were honored with the main awards. Director Lee has provided medical volunteer services and educational support in Myanmar, Afghan refugee camps, Mongolia, Nepal, and more. The Africa Future Foundation has carried out medical environment improvement projects and educational activities in 16 African countries. Director Seo has volunteered in overseas disaster areas and established the “Cambodia Gwangju Clinic,” presenting a model of exemplary official development assistance.

The Boryung Medical Volunteer Award was established in 1985 by the Korean Medical Association and Boryung Pharmaceutical to discover the “Schweizers of this land” who dedicate themselves to their neighbors with medical skills despite difficult conditions in medically underserved areas at home and abroad. It has produced 171 recipients, including the late Father Lee Tae-seok and Sister Yulusia from Kenya, and is recognized as the most prestigious award in the medical community’s social contribution field.
