Jindo-gun Catches Three Birds with One Stone through Spring Afforestation Project
Expansion of Carbon Sinks, Supply of Wood Resources, and Increase of Healing Spaces
[Jindo=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do is investing a budget of 750 million KRW in a spring afforestation project to reap various ripple effects.
This project is being promoted with the purposes of expanding carbon sinks in response to climate change, reducing fine dust, supplying sustainable timber resources, and expanding healing spaces due to increased demand for forest recreation.
The total afforestation area is 72 hectares, with detailed projects including ▲24 hectares of region-specific afforestation ▲30 hectares of economic tree afforestation ▲10 hectares of large tree afforestation ▲8 hectares of fine dust reduction afforestation.
The tree species include Hwangchil, Dongbaek, and Seokryu, and to create forests resistant to forest disasters such as wildfires and landslides, 4-year-old cypress saplings (pyeonbaek daemyo) will also be planted.
An official from the Environment and Forestry Department of Jindo-gun stated, “The small act of planting and nurturing trees becomes not only an economic resource for future generations but also a valuable public and environmental resource in the future.”
Meanwhile, Jindo-gun is actively promoting spring wildfire prevention, which greatly undermines the value of forests, along with this afforestation project.
