Say "Short-Distance Flying Vehicle" Instead of "Flying Mobility"
71.4% Support the Need for a Replacement Term
Public Acceptance Survey Shows Broad Agreement on Adopting "Short-Distance Flying Vehicle"
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on March 16 that the term "flying mobility" be replaced with the Korean expression "geungeori bihaeng sudan," which translates to "short-distance flying vehicle." Flying mobility refers to means of transportation that fly in the air, such as air taxis, drone taxis, and personal flying vehicles, typically accommodating three or fewer passengers.
At a neologism committee meeting held on March 2, the ministry and the institute reviewed the appropriateness and usability of the term and decided to adopt "short-distance flying vehicle" as the replacement. The selection also reflected the results of a survey. In a public acceptance survey conducted from March 4 to 10 with about 2,000 participants, 81.9% of respondents said the new term was appropriate. Additionally, 71.4% agreed on the need to replace the foreign term with a Korean alternative.

The neologism committee is a panel that provides easy-to-understand Korean alternatives for difficult foreign neologisms before they become widespread. Experts from various fields, including Korean language, foreign languages, education, public relations and publishing, information and communications, and media, participate in the committee. The ministry and the institute plan to continue promoting the use of the replacement term, encouraging government agencies and media outlets to take the lead in its adoption.
