Artist Yoo Yeonhong's Solo Exhibition 'Offering Healing in the Urban Heart'... June 18-27 at Seoul Arts Center
The Nation's Largest 100-Unit 'Giant Pinecone' Draws Attention
'Fresh and Lush' Bamboo Series Soaring Skyward
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Young-gyu] The solo exhibition of Western painter Yu Yeon-hong will be held from the 18th to the 27th at the Calligraphy Museum Modern Exhibition Hall 1 (2nd floor) of the Seoul Arts Center on Nambusunhwan-ro, Seocho-gu, Seoul.
Following last year, this is the second exhibition held this year, with the theme "Fragrance in the Forest." Perhaps because of this, the exhibited works mainly feature nature-friendly subjects such as trees, flowers, and pine cones. Through the resonance and waves these evoke, the artist intends to help people tired of daily life regain confidence and deliver a message of hope to them.
The artist presents a total of about 40 works in this exhibition.
Graduating from the Department of Painting at Hongik University College of Fine Arts in 1993, the artist was recognized early for his skills by consecutively winning awards at the 1992 Art World Grand Prize Exhibition and the 1993 Korea Art Exhibition. The solo exhibition held last March at the Topo House Gallery in Insadong once again served as an opportunity to showcase the artist's talents to the world.
The works in this exhibition express tranquility as a motif within calm compositions, portraying no subject in an exaggerated or prominent manner. The main subject of the exhibition, the pine forest, unfolds beyond lushness like a panorama. The windless pine forest appears both static and dynamic at the same time. It is a world where subtlety and splendor coexist.
The artist's paintings are pure and simple like a pine forest. It is said that paintings resemble the artist's appearance and temperament. Therefore, trees, flowers, and pine cones of different appearances harmonize lightly without heaviness.
The newly introduced large pine cone series and crystal pine cones made using resin sparkle like "jewels." They also evoke the feeling of fossils that have endured countless ages. In particular, the large pine cone works attract attention as the first large-scale 100-ho (approx. 162 cm x 130 cm) pieces in Korea, imbued with brilliant gold, purple, emerald, and blue hues. The pine cones in the artist's paintings carry the meaning of pursuing and commemorating the origin of life.
The artist also presents a long-awaited bamboo series. These works embody the vigorous life force soaring from the ground to the sky. According to the artist, the green bamboo symbolizes integrity and expresses hope endlessly reaching toward the sky.

Yu Yeon-hong said, "This 'Fragrance in the Forest' exhibition will provide psychological and spiritual comfort and refuge to lonely, exhausted, and marginalized people," adding, "Focusing on the idea that nature is humanity's only sanctuary, I tried to convey the message that the paintings featuring trees, flowers, and pine cones can heal the sick body and mind of humans."
