Topcomedia Signs Business Transfer Agreement with Topco for Japanese Webtoon Distribution Business
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hyowon] On the 14th, Topco Media announced that on the 11th, it signed a contract to acquire all rights related to intangible and tangible assets and distribution operations concerning the distribution of webtoon intellectual property rights (IP) owned by Topco in Japan for 20 billion KRW.
Topco Media established its Japanese subsidiary, 'Topco Japan,' on January 24th, and by signing the business transfer contract for the Japanese webtoon distribution business from Topco this time, it will officially begin its entry into the Japanese webtoon market.
Yoo Jungseok, CEO of Topco Media, stated, "Japan is the country with the largest comic market in the world, and the transition to online webtoon content is also progressing rapidly. Topco has already confirmed the potential for success by providing its webtoon IP to Japanese webtoon platform companies through Japanese distribution agencies for several years." He added, "Through the establishment of the Japanese subsidiary and the acquisition of the Japanese webtoon distribution business, Topco Media will show a turnaround to profitability this year and transform into a full-fledged content company."
According to the Japan Publishing Science Research Institute, Japan currently has the world's largest comic content market, and among them, the webtoon market's monthly users of webtoon applications reached 24.38 million as of October last year, a 28% increase compared to the same period the previous year. Total sales also increased by 28% from 6.1 trillion KRW in the previous year to 7.8 trillion KRW last year, indicating that the market size is gradually expanding.
Topco has announced its intention to expand its webtoon content to overseas markets through the acquisition of Topco Media (formerly DMT). Topco has already generated continuous distribution sales annually in the Japanese webtoon content market through distribution agencies, and according to the company, these sales are estimated to reach approximately 10 billion KRW this year.

A Topco official said, "If we directly enter and succeed in the Japanese market instead of sharing some sales through Japanese distribution agencies with our webtoon IP, we expect to generate significant sales," adding, "This business transfer will clearly improve Topco Media's sales and profitability."
