View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Kwon Young-se, Vice Chairman of the Presidential Transition Committee, expressed his determination on the 13th, saying, "I will approach this with the mindset of laying the foundation for a successful government."
In a phone interview with Asia Economy on the same day, Vice Chairman Kwon said, "I was planning to rest after the presidential election, but I made the decision late yesterday," adding, "People around me said that how the setup is done at the beginning is important, and the president-elect also wanted it," explaining the background of his acceptance. He added, "I thought it would be better to participate while pacing myself since it would be over in about two months."
Vice Chairman Kwon also revealed that he spoke with Ahn Cheol-soo, the newly appointed Chairman of the Transition Committee, on the same day. Kwon said, "Chairman Ahn said we should work hard for a successful government," and added, "I will work with the mindset of laying the foundation for a successful government, as the president-elect said."
Regarding plans to commute to the Transition Committee office at the Financial Supervisory Service Training Center in Tongui-dong, he said, "I will probably go, but not tomorrow," and added, "Except for the secretariat, the rest of the transition committee members have not yet been appointed." He explained that the appointment of transition committee members would be finalized as soon as possible.
Vice Chairman Kwon previously served as the head of the People Power Party's election campaign headquarters. After the disbandment of the People Power Party's election campaign committee (Chairman Kim Jong-in), he solely took charge of the newly organized campaign headquarters and simultaneously served as the party's secretary-general. He is credited with stabilizing internal turmoil and successfully concluding the election.
Immediately after his appointment announcement, Vice Chairman Kwon posted on his Facebook, "Together with Chairman Ahn Cheol-soo, the transition committee members, and experts from various fields, I will present a vision and goals to ensure the successful launch of the Yoon Suk-yeol government that establishes fairness and common sense as expected by the people, a Yoon Suk-yeol government focused solely on the people and unity, and a Yoon Suk-yeol government oriented toward the future, ensuring efficient and practical governance."
A former prosecutor (passed the 25th Judicial Examination), he won the Seoul Yongsan district in the 21st general election and became a four-term lawmaker. Born in Seoul, he graduated from Paichai High School and Seoul National University Law School. He left public office in 1998 after serving as Deputy Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul District Prosecutors' Office and started practicing as a lawyer. He entered politics in August 2002 by running as the Hannara Party candidate in the Seoul Yeongdeungpo-eul by-election and served three consecutive terms from the 16th to the 18th National Assembly.

He also has experience as the head of the comprehensive situation room for Park Geun-hye’s presidential campaign in the 2012 election. During the Park Geun-hye administration, he served as ambassador to China from 2013 to 2016. He has held positions such as chairman of the party’s strategic planning committee, Supreme Council member, and secretary-general three times, including during the recent presidential election, and served as chairman of the National Assembly Intelligence Committee during the 18th National Assembly.
