[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] The cement industry has decided to actively cooperate with local governments to achieve 'carbon neutrality by 2050.'
The cement industry and local governments plan to broaden mutual cooperation in new projects and policy task joint development, information, technology, and human exchange to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while also exploring long-term plans to foster the cement industry.
The Korea Cement Association, which includes major domestic cement companies as members, held a signing ceremony for the 'Joint Cooperation Project for Realizing Carbon Neutrality in the Cement Industry' Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the 11th at a small conference room in Gangwon Provincial Office. Attendees included CEOs from four Gangwon-based companies?Sampyo, Ssangyong C&E, Hanil Hyundai, and Halla?as well as Gangwon Governor Choi Moon-soon, Kim Sung-in, Director of Gangwon Technopark, and about ten others.
Under this agreement, the four companies in Gangwon will be responsible for proposing technologies and policies related to carbon neutrality, reviewing suitability, and participating in projects; Gangwon Province will provide administrative and financial support; and Gangwon Technopark will be in charge of organizing and operating the working-level consultative body.
Additionally, the four cement companies and Gangwon Province will each invest 100 million KRW, totaling 200 million KRW in project funds, to jointly promote this year's 'Pilot Project to Accelerate Response to Carbon Neutrality in the Cement Industry' with Gangwon Technopark. The project will identify bridge technologies and businesses such as raw and fuel substitution technologies that can be commercialized in the short term, as well as carbon dioxide capture and utilization, and will begin feasibility analysis from technological and economic perspectives.
