"Conservatives Are Back" Major Foreign Media Also Report Yoon Seok-yeol's Election Victory
[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Josel Gina] Following the confirmation of Yoon Seok-yeol, the People Power Party's presidential candidate, winning South Korea's 20th presidential election held on the 9th, major foreign media outlets including The New York Times (NYT) urgently reported the news.
On the morning of the 10th, NYT reported from Seoul that "Yoon Seok-yeol, a former prosecutor and opposition candidate, has won South Korea's fiercely contested presidential election," adding that "the conservative party, which advocates a tougher and more confrontational stance toward North Korea and a strong alliance with the United States, has returned." It also mentioned the news of the progressive rival Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party acknowledging defeat in a press conference just before the announcement of the voting results.
The Associated Press (AP) also reported Yoon's victory from Seoul, noting that from early hours, numerous supporters gathered near Yoon's residence in Seoul, chanting his name. AP mentioned that Yoon will begin his five-year term starting in May and referred to South Korea as the "world's 10th largest economy."
Voice of America (VOA) emphasized that Yoon promised a tough stance toward North Korea, which has recently continued missile provocations, and China, one of South Korea's largest trading partners. It also covered his statements about improving relations with Japan and prioritizing the alliance between South Korea and the United States.
In particular, the outlet reported that although South Korea faces soaring real estate prices, high youth unemployment, and an economic recession caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this election focused on corruption and personal scandals. It also added that all living former presidents have been convicted of crimes after political rivals took power.
