On the 6th (local time), the official Twitter account of the Ukrainian media outlet 'Euromaidan Press' posted a message stating, "Latvian volunteers are sending 20,000 hedgehogs to Ukraine," along with three photos. The photos show sharp metal caltrops made of iron, completed 'hedgehogs,' and plastic boxes filled with dozens of 'hedgehogs.'
Hedgehogs are made by welding angled metal rods and have been used since World War II to block or damage tank advances. The media explained, "The hedgehogs will puncture the tires of Russian military tanks."
Latvia is one of the three Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) and opposes Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Due to concerns that if Russia occupies Ukraine, the next targets could be the Baltic states, including Moldova and Georgia, which were once part of the former Soviet Union, Latvia is also helping Ukraine.
Not only Latvia but also within Ukraine, there is a movement to produce hedgehogs. AFP reported, "The hedgehogs voluntarily made by Ukrainian citizens have already been sent to major cities such as Kyiv and will continue to be sent throughout Ukraine."
According to The Telegraph, a company in Rivne, eastern Ukraine, which has not been invaded by Russia, is reportedly producing hundreds of hedgehogs in preparation for the worst-case scenario.
A welder emphasized, "Half of it is tied to a chain, and the rest is loose," adding, "These 'hedgehogs' are being made all across Ukraine. We are not the only ones making them."
