[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Son Seon-hee] Over the past year, the total number of public complaints and public interest reports received by the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission reached 17 million, with real estate-related complaints being the most frequent.
On the 7th, the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission announced the status of complaint and report reception and processing from platforms such as the National Sinmungo, National Call 110, Corruption and Public Interest Reporting, and the Government Joint Civil Complaint Center. Last year, the total number of public complaints and reports received through the National Sinmungo, Corruption and Public Interest Reporting portals, and others was 17 million, of which 13.3 million were National Sinmungo complaints, accounting for the largest share. This was followed by 3.1 million consultations via National Call 110, 450,000 policy participation cases through the National Thinking Box, 170,000 proposals from citizens and public officials, 47,000 consultations at the Government Joint Civil Complaint Center, 20,000 administrative appeals, and 15,000 corruption and public interest reports.
Among the 13.3 million National Sinmungo complaints, complaints related to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, including collective complaints about apartment complexes, were the highest at 2.13 million. Additionally, complaints to the National Police Agency, such as reports of violations of the Road Traffic Act, amounted to 1.22 million, and complaints related to Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH), which caused public outrage last year due to confirmed cases of land speculation by some employees, totaled 420,000.
The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission also promoted policy improvements through big data-based analysis of these complaints. Representative cases include ▲ halving real estate brokerage fees ▲ improving blind spots in child meal services ▲ enhancing the operation and management of electric kickboards, braille blocks, and eco-friendly vehicles.
Last year, about 15,000 reports were received and processed through the Corruption and Public Interest Reporting portal. These reports included cases of welfare and subsidy fraud, violations of the code of conduct, and breaches of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act.
In particular, to protect whistleblowers who suffered disadvantages due to corruption and public interest reporting, 248 protection measures have been taken since the current government took office, and compensation and rewards paid to them amounted to 23.2 billion KRW. Thanks to their public interest reports, the recovered or increased revenue for the national treasury and local governments reached approximately 1.1165 trillion KRW.
