"All-Out Effort to Control the Fire"‥ Authorities Mobilize All Personnel and Equipment for Containment
44 Helicopters and Over 4,000 Personnel Deployed
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] On the third day since wildfires broke out in various parts of the Gangwon region on the 6th, the forestry and firefighting authorities are mobilizing all available firefighting personnel and equipment to suppress the main fires.
The forestry authorities stated, "We plan to deploy 44 helicopters and about 4,000 personnel to focus all efforts on extinguishing the main fires when the wind calms down somewhat."
They are concentrating 28 helicopters in Gangneung Ok-gye and Donghae, and deploying 10 and 6 helicopters respectively in Yeongwol and Samcheok.
All available personnel including government officials, firefighting teams, firefighters, police officers, and soldiers are being mobilized for firefighting efforts.
In the Seongsan area of Gangneung, where the main fire was successfully extinguished the previous day, about 300 personnel were deployed to prevent re-ignition.
It was reported that the fire did not spread significantly overnight, but defense lines were established in various locations to focus on protecting residential areas and key facilities.
As of now, the forest damage area in the province is estimated at 500 hectares in Gangneung Ok-gye and Donghae, 260 hectares in Samcheok, 75 hectares in Yeongwol Gimsatgat-myeon, and 20 hectares in Gangneung Seongsan.
