On the afternoon of the 2nd, former Prime Minister Chung held a campaign rally near Yongbong IC in Buk-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, supporting candidate Lee Jae-myung. Lawmakers Cho Oh-seop and Lee Hyung-seok, as well as Kang Ki-jung, head of the Honam special advisory group, joined the rally.
He stated, "The election of Yoon Seok-youl, the People Power Party candidate, would mean the failure of prosecutorial reform," and argued that "it is necessary to check prosecutorial power through Lee Jae-myung."
He continued, "It is distressing that Yoon, who was the Prosecutor General under the Moon Jae-in administration, has become the opposition party’s presidential candidate and is wielding that sword against our president and the Democratic Party," adding, "I have never seen a case where a Prosecutor General directly became an opposition presidential candidate. There is no way to judge except through the judgment of the citizens of Gwangju."
He also said, "Democratic Party lawmakers have made great efforts to uphold the people's will for prosecutorial reform," but "the prosecutorial power was so overwhelming that it was really difficult to break the vested interests. Therefore, the establishment of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials and the separation of investigative authority between the police and prosecution were implemented."
Furthermore, he stated, "Candidate Yoon wants to revert these reforms to the starting point, and not only that, he is trying to give more power to the prosecution and strip the Ministry of Justice Minister of the command authority and the Prosecutor General of the investigative command authority," adding, "No matter how much one favors their own side, this is an unacceptable act."
He also criticized, "In the recent TV debate, candidate Yoon said that Japanese troops could enter Korea in an emergency, which is an outrageous remark," and questioned, "How can a presidential candidate, who should be thinking about preventing such a situation, talk about a preemptive strike theory and be willing to risk war?"
