‘World Island Hub Cluster’ Development Accelerates in Mokpo
Establishing a Hub for Exchange and Communication on Island Development with the Korea Island Promotion Agency

View original image[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Jeong Seunghyun] Mokpo City, Jeollanam-do announced on the 25th that it will begin a full-scale development project to establish the "World Island Hub Cluster" in collaboration with the Korea Island Promotion Agency.
The city and the Promotion Agency formed a working council in January to build the World Island Hub Cluster, and on the 24th held the first working council meeting at Mokpo City Hall to discuss ▲preparatory matters for establishing the World Island Hub Cluster ▲development plans for revitalizing the Island Promotion Agency’s surroundings ▲and the expansion of the working council for full-scale promotion.
At the meeting, there was consensus on establishing an island hub cluster near the Island Promotion Agency and Mokpo Port where island residents and island research institutions can exchange and cooperate, aiming to develop it into a world-class island-related mecca. A feasibility study was proposed as a concrete measure.
The Island Promotion Agency plans to utilize the surrounding land to attract island research institutions and create a world island theme park and academy center.
Additionally, the city will actively cooperate in securing related sites and environmental maintenance, while jointly seeking development plans for the Island Promotion Agency to advance globally and into the future.
The council plans to hold regular monthly meetings to concretize the project, expand participation of related institutions such as Jeollanam-do in the working council, secure related budgets, and focus administrative efforts on establishing the World Island Cluster.

A city official stated, “By establishing the World Island Hub Cluster, we expect island-related research institutions to be directly involved, leading to active discovery of the future value of islands and policy discussions, and the creation of new future growth engines mediated by islands.” He added, “Building on Mokpo’s reputation as the center of island policy, we will do our best to promote related projects so that Mokpo can advance as a city that envisions the future of Korea’s islands.”
