[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] Hyundai Motor Company announced on the 25th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with energy company Shell to collaborate in various eco-friendly business sectors such as electric vehicles and hydrogen. According to the MOU, the two companies will work together for several years in areas including electric vehicle charging infrastructure, low-carbon energy solutions, hydrogen, and digital fields.
First, they plan to expand charging infrastructure by utilizing Shell’s gas station network, primarily in Asian countries, gradually extending the coverage area. Shell operates 45,000 gas stations across 80 countries, making it the world’s largest network. In Europe, where charging infrastructure is relatively well established, they aim to enhance charging convenience for Genesis electric vehicle drivers. Shell’s electric vehicle charging brand, Shell Recharge Solutions, and Genesis are considering official MSP partnership agreements in countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. Unlike CPOs, which build, operate, and manage charging stations, MSPs operate services like charging subscription programs.
During the process of converting the power supply of Hyundai’s global factories to renewable energy, they will adopt Shell’s renewable energy solutions. Shell is also reviewing plans to introduce Hyundai’s hydrogen fuel cell trucks and battery electric vehicles when replacing internal combustion engine vehicles used at its global sites with eco-friendly vehicles. The two companies will cooperate to expand the hydrogen ecosystem, including efforts to increase hydrogen vehicle adoption. Previously, the two companies agreed to establish 48 hydrogen charging stations in California, USA. Additionally, they will collaborate in the digital sector to expand connectivity services such as vehicle management and maintenance.
Jang Jae-hoon, President of Hyundai Motor Company, said, "This collaboration will enable innovation across various eco-friendly business areas," adding, "We will cooperate in a way that contributes to creating new demand and expanding the market for electric vehicles and eco-friendly energy by leveraging the specialized capabilities of both companies."
