Damyang's Homegrown High-Sugar, High-Acidity Strawberry 'Jukhyang' Begins Export to the United States
Damyang-gun, Strawberry First Shipment Ceremony for Export to the United States
[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Damyang County's self-developed strawberry variety 'Jukhyang' has embarked on its entry into the U.S. market.
On the 21st, Damyang County in Jeonnam announced on the 22nd that it held a loading ceremony for strawberries destined for export to the U.S. at the Geumseong Nonghyup strawberry collection center.
Attending the loading ceremony were Park Hongjae, Director of Jeonnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services; Yang Yongho, Chairman of Geumseong Nonghyup; Kang Heesoo, Representative of Geumseong Nonghyup Export Strawberry Shipping Association; and Na Sukja, Head of Geumseong-myeon, among others.
The 'Jukhyang' strawberries set to be exported this time are high-sugar, high-hardness varieties developed independently by Damyang County, which have captivated domestic consumers' tastes.
Last year, they entered the Singapore and Malaysia markets along with another self-developed variety, 'Merry Queen,' gaining great popularity locally.
Damyang County has been conducting the 'Premium Agricultural Products Export Complex Pilot Project' since 2021 in collaboration with the Rural Development Administration to foster its self-developed strawberries as premium export varieties. This project supports high-quality superior seedlings, infrastructure development, a freshness maintenance system for strawberry exports, and export-exclusive packaging materials.
Additionally, cultivation trials are underway in the U.S. for the plant variety protection application of Jukhyang and Merry Queen, and market tests conducted from December last year to January this year received the highest evaluation among Korean strawberries in the U.S. market.
