The forum, held from the 18th to the 20th at Marevo Resort in Jeju, was jointly hosted by Chosun University Gwangju Dementia Cohort Research Group and the Asian Dementia Research Foundation, with over 160 experts from industry, academia, research institutes, and hospitals related to Alzheimer’s disease participating.
Now in its fifth year, the event was organized under the theme “Reboot A-D convergence-AI·Basic·Clinical·Data research” to promote convergence research and technology development across various fields for overcoming dementia, and to share research achievements and directions.
The forum focused on Alzheimer’s disease research and shared various convergence and fusion research outcomes such as AI technology for predicting dementia onset using biomedical big data aligned with the Fourth Industrial Revolution era, while seeking practical measures and strategies to overcome dementia through mutual cooperation.
Professor Park Ki-hyung of Gachon University College of Medicine’s Department of Neurology said, “The Gwangju Dementia Cohort Research Group possesses diverse data including 10,000 biomarkers (biological change indicators). This is a large number of biomarkers globally, and continuous research on dementia prevention using these is expected to greatly contribute to overcoming Alzheimer’s dementia.”
Since 2018, the Chosun University Gwangju Dementia Cohort Research Group has developed a Korean standard brain map and brain imaging analysis algorithms, and obtained certification from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety for dementia prediction medical devices applying these technologies.
The dementia prediction medical device “NeuroEye,” which applies this technology, has been approved by the Thai FDA. It automatically analyzes MRI brain images to predict the progression of Alzheimer’s disease and the onset of dementia, developed by domestic researchers using AI technology for early dementia prediction.
Additionally, AI technology that can predict dementia onset by utilizing MRI examination and genetic test results has been developed and entered clinical trials.
Moreover, the group has made significant contributions to early diagnosis research of Alzheimer’s disease by developing technology that can relatively accurately predict tauopathy, the core cause of Alzheimer’s dementia, without undergoing expensive amyloid-PET scans or painful cerebrospinal fluid tests.
