GIST Holds 2021 Academic Year Graduation Ceremony

View original image[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Cho Hyung-joo] Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) held the '2021 Academic Year Degree Conferment Ceremony' on the 18th at the GIST Oryong Hall Multipurpose Hall, attended by over 50 people including key officials, outstanding degree recipients, and representatives of graduates.
At this degree conferment ceremony, degrees were awarded to a total of 293 individuals, including 63 doctoral degrees, 109 master's degrees, and 121 bachelor's degrees.
Notably, this ceremony marked the first doctoral graduates from the newly established Graduate School of Energy Convergence in 2020. The Graduate School of Energy Convergence awarded doctoral degrees to three students: Do-hyung Kim and Seung-woo Lee (advisor Professor Chan-ho Park), and Won-hee Kim (advisor Professor Hyung-jin Kim).
Dr. Seung-woo Lee conducted doctoral research on the design of electrochemical catalysts with controlled oxidation states and pore structures for oxygen evolution reactions in acidic media, publishing a total of 13 papers in prestigious international journals in the field of materials science.
Additionally, he received the 2021 Graduate Catalysis Research Award from the Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers and registered two patents related to catalysis, earning the Korea Institute of Energy Research Director's Award at the degree conferment ceremony for his outstanding achievements.
Undergraduate graduate Daewook Song from the Department of Mechanical Engineering (advisor Professor Hyo-sung Ahn) was recognized for co-founding the startup company Cloudstone during his studies and successfully operating the bundled food delivery platform 'BaedalGeek.' He received the Future Talent Award, given to students who embody GIST's educational philosophy of 3C1P.
Student Daewook Song said, "GIST provides the best environment to prepare for and challenge future innovation," adding, "Based on the capabilities I built through Cloudstone and the humanities and technical knowledge I gained at GIST, I want to continuously challenge myself beyond innovation in the delivery market and grow as a GIST member who leads the future."
President Ki-sun Kim congratulated the 293 graduates who have lived on the GIST campus over the past several years and challenged themselves toward their self-set goals and dreams, saying, "I sincerely congratulate the graduation of 293 students who have challenged themselves toward their self-set goals and dreams while living on the GIST campus over the past several years," and added, "I hope you become warm-hearted scientists and engineers who contribute to the development of national science and technology with the capabilities and proud confidence gained at GIST."

Meanwhile, GIST, celebrating its 29th anniversary this year, has faithfully carried out its founding goals of national mission for scientific and technological development and leading regional industries, based on the two pillars of convergence and internationalization.
