Lamborghini Unveils 'Space Key,' Brand's First NFT Project in History
[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Lamborghini unveiled its non-fungible token (NFT) project on the 17th. Named Lamborghini Space Key, this NFT artwork includes a piece of Lamborghini's advanced carbon fiber composite material, into which a QR code is embedded. The Lamborghini Space Key was produced in a limited edition of only five units.
The core of this NFT project is the use of advanced carbon fiber composite material developed in 2019 through a joint research project with HMRI. At that time, Lamborghini's advanced carbon fiber composite material sent to the International Space Station (ISS) underwent stress testing in the extreme environment of space. After returning from space, the advanced carbon fiber composite material became part of the Space Key. This advanced carbon fiber composite material became a gateway to the NFT world and marked a new milestone in Lamborghini's history.
Stephan Winkelmann, Chairman and CEO of Lamborghini, said, "Innovation is deeply rooted in Lamborghini's DNA. As a leading company in carbon fiber composites in the automotive industry, Lamborghini broke the boundaries of space through a joint research project two and a half years ago. Now, entering the metaverse era, Lamborghini is continuously moving toward new goals. The NFT world wanted Lamborghini, and Lamborghini is pleased to participate in a very passionate and innovative community."
Scanning the QR code embedded in each of the five Space Keys connects to photographic works by Swiss photographer Fabian Oefner. The photographic work created by Fabian Oefner, known as 'Space Time Memory,' depicts a Lamborghini Aventador Ultimae flying toward space. 'Space Time Memory' was completed by Fabian Oefner and his team photographing over 1,500 Ultimae parts individually and then combining the images. The curvature of the Earth was also captured by sending a camera-equipped meteorological observation device to the edge of the stratosphere. It took more than two months to complete this work.

Fabian Oefner explained the creative background of the work, saying, "For me, the piece 'Space Time Memory' is a metaphor for the 'memories' we create in our daily lives. Memories are based on reality, and we store these memories in our brains, which can be thought of as a digital world. Sometimes I wonder which is more precious: the moment in reality when memories are created or the memories stored in the brain. Through this work, I also express the contemplation about whether what is more valuable to us in the increasingly expanding digital world is 'reality' itself or the memories of reality existing in the digital world, that is, copies and derivatives."
