Spanish fishing vessel sinks off the east coast of Canada... 7 dead, 14 missing
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] A Spanish fishing vessel sank off the coast of Newfoundland in eastern Canada, resulting in at least 7 deaths and 12 missing, according to Canadian and Spanish maritime authorities on the 15th (local time).
According to the Spanish maritime rescue authorities, the 50-meter-long Pitanso vessel sank around 5 a.m. that day off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The fishing vessel sent two distress signals from a location 450 km away from Newfoundland, and subsequently, a nearby Spanish fishing vessel working in the area confirmed the ship's lifeboat. The lifeboat contained 3 survivors and 4 bodies.
Brian Owens, spokesperson for the Joint Rescue Coordination Center, stated, "Search efforts are being hampered by strong winds, waves, and fog."

The vessel was reported to have 24 people on board, including 16 Spanish crew members, 5 Peruvians, and 3 Ghanaians. The search involved 2 helicopters, aircraft, and fishing vessels from Spain and Portugal.
