COVID-19 New Cases 54,941... Another Record High (Comprehensive Report 2)

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jihwan] The number of new COVID-19 cases has once again broken the record for the highest daily count.

On the 12th, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency's Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) announced that as of midnight, 54,941 new COVID-19 cases were reported. This is 819 more than the previous record of 54,122 cases reported on the 10th.

With this new record, the daily cases have remained above 50,000 for three consecutive days. Compared to 36,345 cases reported a week ago on the 5th, this is an increase of 18,596 cases.

The health authorities expect that daily new cases could reach between 130,000 and 170,000 by the end of this month. The National Institute for Mathematical Sciences has also projected that the daily cases could peak at 360,000 in early next month.

Among the 54,941 new cases reported on this day, 54,828 were domestic transmissions and 113 were imported cases. The cumulative total of confirmed cases stands at 1,294,205. Looking at domestic cases by region, the Seoul metropolitan area reported 15,952 cases in Gyeonggi, 13,189 in Seoul, and 5,059 in Incheon. Outside the metropolitan area, Busan reported 3,049 cases, Daegu 2,370, Chungnam 2,185, Gyeongbuk 1,827, Gyeongnam 1,696, Gwangju 1,573, Jeonbuk 1,546, Daejeon 1,509, Jeonnam 1,210, Chungbuk 1,154, Gangwon 957, Ulsan 726, Jeju 503, and Sejong 323.

The number of new deaths was 33, a decrease of 16 from the 49 reported the previous day. The cumulative death toll is 7,045. The fatality rate (deaths relative to cumulative confirmed cases) is 0.54%.

The number of critically ill patients increased by 4 from 271 the previous day to 275. This marks the 15th consecutive day with the number of critically ill patients in the mid-to-high 200s. The number of patients under home treatment rose by 22,247 from 177,014 the previous day, the second day after switching to the home treatment system, reaching a cumulative total of 199,261.
