According to the Jeonnam education community on the 3rd, this superintendent election is expected to be a three-way race featuring the incumbent Superintendent Jang Seok-ung, who is seeking re-election, Kim Dae-jung, Standing Committee Chairman of the Jeonnam Education Transformation Practice Coalition, and Kim Dong-hwan, principal of Boseong Deungnyangnam Elementary School.
Jang Seok-ung, the current Jeonnam Superintendent of Education, is a former national chairman of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union (JeonGyoJo) and was elected as the 18th Jeonnam Superintendent of Education with the support of JeonGyoJo and various civic groups at the time.
Holding the advantage of incumbency, he is expected to delay his preliminary candidate registration and register around late April or early May to seek re-election.
Kim Dae-jung, Standing Committee Chairman of the Jeonnam Education Transformation Practice Coalition, completed his preliminary candidate registration for superintendent at the Jeonnam Election Commission at 9 a.m. on the 3rd.
Candidate Kim Dae-jung is regarded as an expert with exceptional insight in local autonomy, balanced development, and educational autonomy, having worked across education, politics, administration, and civil society fields for over 30 years.
Principal Kim Dong-hwan also officially declared his candidacy by registering as a preliminary candidate at the Election Commission on the 1st. Although he has more than 10 years left until retirement, Kim Dong-hwan applied for honorary retirement at the end of February to run in the superintendent election.
The Jeonnam Election Commission began accepting preliminary candidate registrations for the governor and superintendent elections of the 8th nationwide simultaneous local elections starting from the 1st.
Once registered as a preliminary candidate, one can conduct election campaigns such as setting up an election office, distributing campaign business cards, wearing sashes and campaign materials, sending campaign text messages, and sending campaign emails.

From this election onward, preliminary candidates can establish preliminary candidate support committees and raise campaign funds up to 661.5 million KRW, which is 50% of the election expense limit.
