Illegal Immigration from the US and Mexico Expected to Reach Record High This Spring
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The U.S. government predicts that the number of illegal immigrants caught attempting to cross into the United States from the Mexican border will reach a record high this spring.
On the 27th (local time), according to major foreign media, multiple U.S. government officials forecasted that "if the worst-case scenario materializes, the number of illegal immigrants apprehended at the Mexican border area could reach an average of about 9,000 per day." This represents an increase of nearly 40 percentage points compared to last year's peak of around 6,500.
Since President Joe Biden took office, the number of illegal immigrants in the U.S. has surged to record levels. According to statistics from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in the 2021 fiscal year (October 2020 to September 2021), the number of illegal immigrants caught at border areas including Mexico exceeded 1.7 million.
Unlike former President Donald Trump, who built massive walls at the border and maintained a 'zero tolerance' policy toward immigrants, President Biden has halted wall construction and expressed a relatively welcoming stance toward immigrants.
However, as the number of illegal immigrants skyrockets, the Biden administration's concerns are deepening. The Republican Party is preparing to sharply focus on the illegal immigration issue ahead of the midterm elections this November.
