[2022 Green Mobility Awards] New Mobility Award 'SK Telecom'
[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] On the 26th, SK Telecom received the 'New Mobility Award' at the '2022 Korea Green Mobility Awards' hosted by Asia Economy and sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Environment.
SK Telecom is promoting related businesses as a future 'core business' to lead the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) industry.
UAM is a transportation service that flies electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (e-VTOL) over urban areas covering distances of 30 to 50 km. In Korea, the government is leading efforts to commercialize it by 2025.
As of 2018, the domestic traffic congestion cost exceeds 67 trillion won annually, accounting for 3.6% of the nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP). UAM, regarded as a promising transportation method to solve this issue, is also evaluated as an eco-friendly transportation means since the aircraft uses electric charging. This aligns with SK Telecom’s ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management principles.
SK Telecom aims to be a service provider that integrally offers the service elements necessary for UAM boarding. Through cooperation with its mobility subsidiary T map Mobility, it targets a seamless connection service between ground transportation and UAM in the air. To achieve this, it plans to comprehensively implement UAM by combining technological capabilities such as telecommunications and artificial intelligence (AI) with service capabilities in subscription, media, and mobility.
