The 'Seaweed Research Center' is a specialized research institution in the field of seaweed, established for the first time in Korea at the basic local government level, located on a 9,637㎡ site with a building spanning from one basement floor to four above ground floors, completed in December 2016.
On the basement first floor, there is a seed cultivation building with an area of 823.68㎡ dedicated to seaweed breed development research.
The 'Seaweed Research Center' focuses its research efforts on establishing a seaweed seed production system and coastal ecological restoration in Gijang by distributing high-quality seeds of sea mustard and kelp suitable for the Gijang sea area, developing alternative breeds in response to climate change, and researching breeds for creating sea forests.
Last year, the center succeeded in producing high-quality, marketable sea mustard seeds by combining indoor cultivation and offshore transplantation. Subsequently, 1,600 frames were distributed to a total of 89 fishing households across 8 fishing villages to conduct experimental research.
In its sixth year of research this year, the center is developing seed production focused on early-harvest sea mustard, which commands a higher selling price, by adjusting indoor cultivation technology and appropriate water depth according to environmental conditions to match the seaweed seed planting period of fishermen.
