Gwangju Firefighter: "Not Even 10 Won of Taxes Are Worth Wasting on Shameless Hyundai Development"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Fire Department branch of the National Public Officials Labor Union stated that not even 10 won of tax money is worth giving to Hyundai Engineering & Construction, the contractor responsible for the Gwangju apartment collapse accident that resulted in one death and five missing persons.
The Gwangju Fire Department branch of the Public Officials Labor Union said in a statement, “Rescue workers, Gwangju citizens, and businesses around the collapse site are anxiously working together with no one standing aside to rescue the missing and quickly recover the situation ahead of the Lunar New Year,” adding, “However, we do not know what Hyundai Engineering & Construction, the party responsible for the collapse disaster, is doing.”
They continued, “Are they only thinking about explaining the poor construction and avoiding responsibility rather than searching for the missing and managing the accident?” and emphasized, “We are angry at Hyundai Engineering & Construction, which not only took precious citizens’ lives and caused emotional wounds to Gwangju citizens again but is also showing disgraceful behavior.”
Furthermore, they said, “All resources must be mobilized to protect citizens’ lives and safety, but the premise is that the cause must be a natural disaster or an unavoidable situation,” adding, “Since this disaster is clearly a man-made accident caused by Hyundai Engineering & Construction’s greed, if the party responsible ignores it and expects the restoration to be fully covered by citizens’ taxes, not even 10 won is worth it.”
They also stated, “Hyundai Engineering & Construction must sincerely apologize to the citizens of Gwangju and actively take charge of the recovery,” adding, “Hyundai Engineering & Construction must take responsibility for every single 10-won coin of all costs incurred from this accident.”
