Gwangju High School Student Council Condemns Apartment Collapse Accident: "People-Centered Approach and Safety Must Be Ensured"
On the morning of the 18th, the student council composed of high school students from the Gwangju area is issuing a statement condemning Hyundai Development Company and urging the enactment of safety laws at the site of the collapse of a newly constructed apartment building under construction by Hyundai Development Company.

They strongly urged the necessity of a more human-centered society and the guarantee of safety.
The Gwangju High School Student Council announced a statement containing eight demands related to the apartment collapse accident near the Hwajeong I-Park accident site in Gwangju on the 18th.
They appealed to the state and citizens to revise laws and regulations for a safe society and to thoroughly supervise so that all students and citizens can live in a safe and sustainable society.
They also stated that all high school students in the Gwangju area will remember the previous Hakdong disaster and the current Hwajeong-dong disaster, and will monitor and act together.
The students announced eight demands.
They emphasized, "We demand the government transparently reveal all suspicions and causes, including illegal subcontracting and poor construction," and "We strongly condemn the construction companies and contractors responsible for causing numerous casualties and missing persons again following the Hakdong disaster, and urge the enactment and strengthening of related laws."
They continued, "We demand a comprehensive safety inspection of all construction sites throughout Gwangju where large-scale construction projects are underway."
They also claimed, "Please define the fundamental cause of the disaster as the widespread safety indifference in our society," and "As citizens who will live in the future, we demand the older generation to eradicate this."
Furthermore, they stated, "We assert that our society must become one where humans are the purpose, not means for material things," and "We student citizens will actively act for such a society and ask the older generation to join us."
Additionally, they urged, "We call on politicians who show little interest in this disaster to turn their attention to Gwangju's pain and act to prevent recurrence for the people."

They added, "One of the greatest human rights is the right to survive by being guaranteed safety from threats," and "Please prepare concrete measures so that this right is fully guaranteed, preventing our students and citizens from fearing and suffering, enabling them to lead safe lives."
