[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] A team consisting of senior students Kim Seong-wook, Kim Byung-hoon, and Park Bo-kyung from the Department of Physics, College of Natural Sciences, Gyeongsang National University announced that they received the Excellence Award (2nd place) at the 2021 Fall semester Korean Physical Society Undergraduate Project Presentation.
The student team directly fabricated photonic crystals and studied their structure and optical properties. This research was based on two semesters of work conducted in the physics problem-based learning (PBL) course, ‘Creative Physics Research Comprehensive Design,’ and included follow-up studies.
They received support from the ‘Convergence and Practical Science Basic Talent Development Project Group’ led by the Department of Physics, under the university specialization support project based on educational innovation currently underway at Gyeongsang National University.
Based on this research, the team was also recognized for excellence in several on-campus competitions, including the 2021 GNU Industry-Academia Cooperation Week Capstone Design Competition (Bronze Prize) and the 2021 College of Natural Sciences Academic Creativity Contest (Gold Prize).
Student Kim Seong-wook said, “It was fascinating that even a single material exhibits various physical properties depending on its size, shape, and the specific rules by which it bonds.”
Student Kim Byung-hoon said, “Achieving certain results in various on- and off-campus competitions has boosted my confidence. I am also grateful to our advising professor who always encouraged and supported us.”
Student Park Bo-kyung said, “Using the physics knowledge we have studied so far, we were able to calculate the optical properties of the experimentally realized photonic crystals, and it was impressive that the theoretical calculations and experimental measurements matched well.”
