[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyun-joo] A public opinion poll shows that in a multi-candidate race, Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, and Yoon Seok-youl, the presidential candidate of the People Power Party, are in a close contest within the margin of error. Ahn Cheol-soo, the presidential candidate of the People’s Party, who had shown a steady rise recently, showed a decline compared to the previous week.
According to a survey conducted by the Korea Society Opinion Institute (KSOI) on June 14-15 targeting 1,004 adult men and women nationwide, Yoon’s support rate rose by 6.2 percentage points from the previous week to 41.4%, ranking first within the margin of error (±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level). Lee’s support rate fell by 1.4 percentage points from the previous week to 36.2%.
This is the first time in five weeks since the December 10-11, 2023 survey (42.0%) that Yoon’s support rate exceeded 40% in the KSOI poll.
Ahn’s support rate dropped by 5.5 percentage points from the previous week to 9.6%, and Sim Sang-jung, the presidential candidate of the Justice Party, recorded a support rate of 3.6%.
Also, the survey found that the majority view the upcoming presidential election as a 'judgment on the current administration.' In the survey on the 'nature of the next presidential election,' 50.3% responded with the 'judgment on the current administration' (meaning the opposition candidate should win to judge the current government’s administration), while 36.5% responded with the 're-election of the current administration' (meaning the ruling party candidate should win for stable governance and continuity).
