'The Power of the Dog' and 'House of Gucci' Lead SAG Nominations
Whether it will lead to an award is uncertain... More competitive actors than ever join the cast
This year, the competition for the American Academy Awards is expected to be between 'The Power of the Dog' and 'House of Gucci.' Both films received the most nominations at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, often called the "preview of the Oscars."
The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) announced the nominees for the 28th annual ceremony on the 12th (local time). Jane Campion's 'The Power of the Dog' was nominated in three categories: Best Actor (Benedict Cumberbatch), Best Supporting Actress (Kirsten Dunst), and Best Supporting Actor (Kodi Smit-McPhee). Ridley Scott's 'House of Gucci' also earned three nominations, including the prestigious Casting Award, Best Actress (Lady Gaga), and Best Supporting Actor (Jared Leto).
Whether these nominations will lead to wins remains uncertain. More formidable actors than ever have joined the race. 'House of Gucci' competes for the Casting Award against Kenneth Branagh's 'Belfast,' Sean Heder's 'CODA,' Adam McKay's 'Don't Look Up,' and Reinaldo Marcus Green's 'King Richard.' The Best Actor nominees include Cumberbatch, Javier Bardem ('Being the Ricardos'), Andrew Garfield ('Tick, Tick... Boom!'), Will Smith ('King Richard'), and Denzel Washington ('The Tragedy of Macbeth'). The Best Actress nominees include Gaga, Jessica Chastain ('The Eyes of Tammy Faye'), Olivia Colman ('The Lost Daughter'), Jennifer Hudson ('Respect'), and Nicole Kidman ('Being the Ricardos'). At the Golden Globes, which concluded on the 9th, Smith and Kidman (Drama categories), Rachel Zegler ('West Side Story'), and Garfield (Musical/Comedy category) each took home trophies.
