Genesis Enters Global Top 10: "220,000 Units Sold This Year, 20,000 G90 Units"
Premium Cars Rank 10th in 4 Major Regions "Acura and Infiniti Surpass, Quality Recognized"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] Genesis, the premium brand of Hyundai Motor Group, has risen to the top 10 in sales just six years after its launch. This is a 'double celebration' following the breakthrough of 200,000 units in annual sales. Genesis plans to accelerate its entry into key markets such as Europe and China this year, while also aiming to raise the global annual sales of its flagship model, the G90, to around 20,000 units.
According to Hyundai Motor Group on the 13th, Genesis sold a total of 169,132 units from January to November last year in the United States, Europe, China, and Korea, ranking 10th among premium brands. The four major regions?U.S., Europe, China, and Korea?are key areas responsible for 90% of the sales volume of the top 14 premium car brands.
Looking at the overall ranking, the three German brands?Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi?maintained the top three positions with sales ranging from 1.4 million to 1.76 million units, followed by Tesla, Lexus (Toyota), Volvo, Cadillac (GM), Land Rover, and Porsche. Genesis, with sales of 169,132 units, surpassed Lincoln (Ford, about 168,000 units), Acura (Honda, about 155,000 units), Jaguar (about 70,000 units), and Infiniti (Nissan, about 59,000 units) to secure 10th place.
The reasons behind Genesis surpassing 200,000 units in annual sales and securing a top 10 position in key markets include strengthening its lineup centered on sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and increased brand awareness in major markets such as North America. In fact, models like the GV70 and GV80 have gained popularity not only in Korea but also in the North American market, being selected as finalists for 'Car of the Year.'
Jang Jae-hoon, President of Genesis, recently told reporters that the internal combustion engine competitiveness has reached 90-95% compared to top-tier competitors, adding, "(Especially) the meaningful part is that we have entered the top 10 luxury car brands, and we see that Genesis has overtaken Honda's Acura and Nissan's Infiniti." He also stated, "We will continue to solidify our market positioning by concretizing product, marketing, and service strategies."
Genesis plans to further accelerate its overseas market expansion centered on the recently launched G90. The flagship full-size sedan G90 sold 7,079 units last year, capturing a 3.1% share of the global full-size sedan market. Next year, Genesis aims to increase this to 8.6% (about 20,000 units). To achieve this, Genesis will sequentially release the G90 in key markets including Korea, North America, China, and the Middle East.
President Jang also projected the total sales target for this year to be between 215,000 and 220,000 units, saying, "Last year, we established a foothold in Europe and received good reviews through test drives, and we are also building brand bases in four regions in China to launch full-scale sales. This year, we need to make further progress in these two markets."
Meanwhile, Genesis plans to accelerate electrification and autonomous driving. Following last year's launch of derivative models such as the 'G80 and GV70 electrified models' and the first dedicated electric vehicle GV60 based on the E-GMP platform, new model launches are also planned for this year. Regarding autonomous driving technology, Genesis plans to apply Level 3 autonomous driving technology to the G90 by the end of this year. Level 3 autonomous driving refers to conditional automation where driver intervention is required in emergency situations.

President Jang said, "We plan to electrify other segments with a new platform separate from E-GMP, not just full-size sedans," adding, "The application of Level 3 autonomous driving to the G90 is scheduled to start domestically in the fourth quarter of this year, and we are conducting research and development to implement conditions where the driver does not need to be actively involved in driving at speeds below 60 km/h on highways, in accordance with regulations."
