Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority Secures New Deep-Sea Service to Africa
Weekly Scheduled Service Connecting Major Ports in West Africa
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] Yeosu Gwangyang Port Authority (President Park Seonghyun) announced on the 12th that despite difficult conditions such as the recent spread of COVID-19, it successfully attracted a new deep-sea container service through proactive sales and marketing efforts.
The world's largest shipping company, Maersk, made its first call at Gwangyang Port on this day with the MAERSK IYO vessel of the FEW3 service, which calls at major ports in Asia and Africa.
This service is a weekly regular container service connecting major Asian ports such as Gwangyang Port, Shanghai, and Singapore to major West African ports including Tema, Lom?, Cotonou, Walvis Bay, and others.
The authority explained that the establishment of this new deep-sea service will strengthen the connectivity of Gwangyang Port’s deep-sea routes and is expected to generate approximately 20,000 TEUs of new cargo volume annually.
The authority and the Gwangyang Port container terminal operator achieved the success of attracting a total of nine new services in 2021, including five Northeast Asia calls, three Southeast Asia calls, and one coastal call, by strengthening non-face-to-face marketing amid the cargo volume decline crisis caused by the spread of COVID-19.
President Park Seonghyun of the authority, who celebrated the first call of the MAERSK IYO vessel on this day, stated, “This is an opportunity to recover the weakened Gwangyang Port deep-sea network due to the ongoing global pandemic crisis in shipping and ports,” and expressed his ambition, saying, “We will continue efforts to attract additional calls to provide various maritime logistics options to local shippers.”
Meanwhile, the authority and the terminal operator are carrying out various attraction activities such as strengthening on-site and online sales marketing and promoting key shipper-carrier matching marketing to respond effectively and swiftly to the shipping and port logistics crisis caused by the spread of COVID-19.
