Wang Wenbin (汪文斌), spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated at a regular briefing on the 7th, "North Korea has consistently supported China's hosting of the Olympics," and added, "We appreciate their support and encouragement for China to hold a grand and splendid Olympics this time as well." He further said, "China hopes to continue strengthening exchanges and cooperation with North Korea in various fields, including sports, and to maintain a friendly cooperative relationship to achieve greater development."

According to the Korean Central News Agency and others on the same day, the North Korean Olympic Committee and Ministry of Physical Culture and Sports sent letters to the Chinese Olympic Committee, the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics Organizing Committee, and the General Administration of Sport of China to officially announce their non-participation in the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended the North Korean Olympic Committee's (NOC) membership until the end of this year after North Korea did not participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Although North Korea was unable to participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics, North Korean athletes could have participated as individuals. Through this decision, North Korea has indicated that it will not participate in the Beijing Winter Olympics even as individual athletes.
