Yoon Seok-yeol and Lee Jun-seok Conflict Temporarily 'Sealed' with Patching... The Challenge of a 'True One Team'
Yun Hae-gwan Issue Again Unresolved Directly
Remains a Task for Kwon Young-se, Election Headquarters Chief
Healing Party Conflicts That Left Scars Also a Challenge
Tasks Include Recovering Approval Ratings and Blocking Opposition Unification Theory
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The internal conflict within the People Power Party has been hastily "stitched up" for the time being. Candidate Yoon Seok-yeol and Representative Lee Jun-seok joined hands and quickly patched up the wounded areas. For now, they have prevented the wounds from worsening and bought some time for healing. Whether the wounds will heal well and leave scars or whether the infected flesh will burst through the stitches will only be revealed with time.
According to political circles on the 7th, the internal conflict in the People Power Party was resolved by the 62-year-old presidential candidate, who showed great tolerance, embracing the reckless actions of the 37-year-old young party leader who felt ignored by the party members. If the presidential election in March this year had not been abandoned, the outcome would have been the same regardless of the process. Since Candidate Yoon has adopted Representative Lee's theory of generational integration (or generational encirclement) as a presidential election strategy, whether officially or unofficially, Lee inevitably remains a figure to be embraced. How much appeal Representative Lee has to young voters is another matter, but the reality is that without Lee's support, it is impossible to approach the 20s and 30s age groups. Ultimately, the key point in viewing this incident will be whether the situation looks better or who appears to take the initiative.
Moreover, the common sense that "internal division leads to certain defeat" was well known to everyone. With only two months left until the presidential election, neither the candidate nor the party leader had the luxury to continue the internal conflict indefinitely.
After dramatic developments including a direct clash between the presidential candidate and the party leader over party appointments and the push by affiliated lawmakers for a resolution demanding the party leader's resignation, the situation was temporarily settled with a touching reconciliation and a story to tell.
However, despite this "event," the key question remains whether the root cause of the controversy has been resolved. Representative Lee, despite criticism of "internal backstabbing," persistently focused on the issue of Yoon's core associates (Yoonhaekgwan).
On the day, Representative Lee appeared on a radio show and, when asked whether the Yoonhaekgwan issue had been resolved, he avoided a direct answer by saying, "I have infinite expectations for Kwon Young-se, the head of the election campaign headquarters." Without giving a clear "it has been resolved" response, he expressed hope that Head Kwon would play a role internally. The powder keg, such as the interpretation of "priority in party affairs," which was like a nuclear button, was actually about the Yoonhaekgwan issue. It is also known that Lee opposed the appointment of Representative Lee Cheol-gyu to prevent the unilateral actions of Yoon's close associates. However, in the end, this issue was settled as a matter of Lee's "personal feelings" toward the lawmaker, resolved through an apology. The focus was only on stitching up the conflict, avoiding the essence of the problem. As a result, the Yoonhaekgwan issue remains intact and has become Head Kwon's task.

Internal conflicts still remain latent. With political speakers mobilized all day, the party's internal conflict became fully exposed, leading to significant aftershocks. People Power Party lawmaker Park Soo-young appeared on a radio show and said, "There was not a single person at the party meeting who defended Representative Lee," and "Many did not feel sincerity in Lee's speech." This was mentioned in the context of explaining that public opinion did not turn because of Lee's 30-minute speech, but because Candidate Yoon's persuasion ultimately led to the "stitching up." In response, Lee snapped back, saying, "I hope they stop halfway and come to their senses." When wounds are deep, even well-stitched repairs inevitably leave marks. Whether the scars remain visible or become unsightly depends on how well the stitching was done, and this remains an ongoing issue.
Above all, the challenge is public opinion. Since December, Candidate Yoon's approval ratings have plummeted due to family issues including his wife, conflicts with Representative Lee, and his political remarks. Although the People Power Party denies it, the open mention of opposition candidate unification is because Candidate Ahn has fully benefited from Yoon's drop in support. It was Candidate Yoon who created the absolute two-strong scenario from the two-strong-one-middle pattern. Preventing the shift to a three-strong structure and quickly reversing approval ratings is necessary to extinguish demands for opposition unification. Candidate Yoon is betting on other appearances such as subway greetings, but it remains to be seen whether these efforts will lead to a turnaround in public opinion.
