Jeonju City Sports Facility Construction 'Smooth Sailing'
A Total Project Cost of 85.4 Billion KRW Invested... Jeonju Indoor Gymnasium and Dedicated Curling Arena Under Development
[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Jeonju City announced on the 6th that the expansion of sports facilities to broadly provide conditions for citizens to enjoy physical activities is progressing smoothly.
According to Jeonju City, a total project cost of 85.4 billion KRW is being invested to promote construction projects such as △Jeonju Indoor Gymnasium △Innovation City Multipurpose Sports Center △Western Area Community-Based National Sports Center △Curling Dedicated Stadium.
In the case of the Jeonju Indoor Gymnasium, which will be used as a professional basketball arena, a total project cost of 52.2 billion KRW will be invested by 2023 to build a multipurpose sports facility capable of basketball, volleyball, and badminton with a total floor area of 14,947㎡, consisting of one basement floor and three above-ground floors, and a seating capacity of 6,000 at the Jangdong World Cup Stadium area.
In November 2020, a design plan under the theme ‘On (蘊) Gyeong (景)’ was selected, and the detailed design service is currently underway. Full-scale construction is scheduled to begin in May and be completed by December next year.
The Innovation City Multipurpose Sports Center, which will become the representative community sports space of Innovation City, is being built on site 852, Jung-dong, with a total cost of 11.6 billion KRW. It will have a total floor area of 3,909㎡ with one basement floor and two above-ground floors. It will include a 25-meter six-lane swimming pool, a gymnasium for volleyball, basketball, badminton, and other sports, as well as multipurpose sports spaces and an outdoor terrace.
It is scheduled to be completed by December.
The Western Area Community-Based National Sports Center, which will serve as a community sports hub for residents of Seosin-dong area, is being constructed with a total project cost of 9.6 billion KRW at Don-aegi Saem Park in Seosin-dong, with a total floor area of 2,300㎡ consisting of one basement floor and two above-ground floors.
It will be equipped with a 25-meter five-lane swimming pool, a multipurpose gymnasium for volleyball, basketball, badminton, and other sports, and multipurpose spaces.
Jeonju City broke ground in March last year and has currently completed the basement frame construction, planning to finish the construction by August.
The Jeonju Hwasan Gymnasium will have Jeollabuk-do’s only curling dedicated stadium.
The construction was decided to provide an optimal training environment for curling athletes who had to travel long distances for training due to the lack of a curling stadium. The curling stadium will be built with a total project cost of 12 billion KRW, with a total floor area of 2,400㎡ and two above-ground floors, featuring five curling sheets and 200 spectator seats.
Jeonju City plans to hold a design competition within this month, receive submissions, and select the final winning design through evaluation. Completion is scheduled for December 2023.
Jeonju City expects that the establishment of various sports facilities throughout the region will help improve citizens’ physical fitness, enhance quality of life through healthy leisure activities, and greatly contribute to revitalizing the local economy by attracting international and nationwide sports competitions.
