'Graffiti?'... Cultural Heritage Site 'Yeongwollu' Vandalism Discovered
Evidence such as spray found at the scene... Yeoju City requests investigation
[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Yeoju City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 4th that it has requested a police investigation after graffiti damage occurred on the Gyeonggi-do designated cultural asset (Provincial Cultural Material No. 37) 'Yeongwollu (迎月樓)'.
According to the city, the Gyeonggi-do Cultural Heritage Care Project Team received a report around 5 p.m. on December 30th stating that "there is black spray paint graffiti on about 10 locations including the Yeongwollu foundation stones, pillars, back of the stairs, and the second-floor wooden floor."
At the scene, spray paint presumed to have been used for the graffiti, shoes, badges, and other items were found.
The city secured the evidence, reported it to Gyeonggi Province, and then requested a police investigation for violation of the 'Cultural Heritage Protection Act'.
Yeongwollu, the old main gate of the Yeoju government office, is a pavilion relocated and built at its current site in 1925 by then-county governor Shin Hyun-tae.
