Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Wins Order for Two Patrol Ships Worth 583 Billion KRW in the Philippines
Contract Signed for Construction of Two 3,100-ton Patrol Ships with the Philippine Department of National Defense
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has succeeded in securing an order for two patrol vessels worth a total of 583 billion KRW from the Philippines.
On the 28th, Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering announced that it had signed a construction contract with the Philippine Department of National Defense for two 3,100-ton patrol vessels. The ordered patrol vessels will be built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan and delivered to the Philippines by 2025.
The vessels ordered this time have a displacement of 3,100 tons, a length of 116 meters, a width of 14.6 meters, a cruising speed of 15 knots (approximately 28 km/h), and a range of 4,500 nautical miles (8,330 km). They will be equipped with anti-ship missiles and vertical launch systems (VLS), and an AESA radar to enhance air defense detection capabilities will be installed.
Hyundai Heavy Industries previously secured an order in 2016 for two 2,600-ton Philippine frigates and recently delivered them successfully. By applying the experience of building and operating frigates to the construction of these patrol vessels, the quality and performance of the ships will be maximized.
In particular, Hyundai Heavy Industries shipped and dispatched quarantine supplies such as 20,000 masks, 180 bottles of disinfectant, 2,000 hand sanitizers, and 300 packs of disinfectant tissues on the first frigate delivered in May last year as a token of gratitude to the Philippines, a participant in the Korean War.
