"Save the Burning Earth"... 139.9 Billion KRW Investment in Climate and Environmental R&D Next Year
Ministry of Science and ICT to Disclose Investment Areas and Budget Details on the 28th
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] "Save the burning Earth." The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 28th that it will allocate a total of 139.9 billion KRW for climate and environmental research and development projects next year.
Six new projects in 10 core technology areas urgently needing support, such as Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) and resource circulation, will be added. In particular, the new projects (approximately 43.74 billion KRW across 28 projects) will all be announced within the first quarter, aiming for prompt project support.
Specifically, about 29.5 billion KRW will be newly allocated to the CCUS field, including 6.6 billion KRW for the ‘Development of Carbon Resource Platform Compound Manufacturing Technology,’ 9 billion KRW for ‘CCU 3050,’ 9.8 billion KRW for ‘Next-generation Carbon Resource Technology Development,’ and 11 billion KRW for ‘Carbon to X Technology Development for Useful Substance Production.’
Additionally, budgets have been newly allocated for the development of eco-friendly raw materials using recyclable resources, such as 2 billion KRW for ‘Biomass-based Carbon-neutral Bioplastic Product Technology Development’ and 7.5 billion KRW for ‘Petroleum Substitute Eco-friendly Chemical Technology Development.’
In the hydrogen fuel cell sector, 18 billion KRW will be supported for the development of eco-friendly hydrogen production and stable hydrogen storage technologies (10.4 billion KRW for the Hydrogen Energy Innovation Technology Development project and 7.6 billion KRW for the Future Hydrogen Source Technology Development project). Approximately 12 billion KRW will also be provided for the development of core fuel cell element technologies to expand fuel cell applications (commercial vehicles, buildings, etc.).

In fields such as renewable energy, climate change adaptation, climate technology cooperation with developing countries, and fine dust response, a total of 24.7 billion KRW will be supported through the Climate Change Response Technology Development project and the Leapfrog Carbon Neutral Technology Development project for solar cells, bioenergy, secondary batteries, and more. For climate change adaptation, 1.7 billion KRW will be allocated to ‘Technology Development to Minimize Climate Change Impacts,’ and 400 million KRW will be provided for the ‘Climate Technology Cooperation Foundation’ project, which supports climate change response in developing countries using excellent domestic climate technologies. Additionally, 2.3 billion KRW will be newly invested in international cooperation utilizing CTCN (Climate Technology Centre and Network) for promoting international climate technology cooperation. Furthermore, 11.25 billion KRW will be allocated to strengthen three-dimensional fine dust observation using the Cheollian 2B satellite and to support international joint research among Northeast Asian researchers to clarify the generation process and physical and chemical characteristics of fine dust. A pilot project worth 1.3 billion KRW will also be newly launched to provide education on R&D planning and execution for master's and doctoral students in the climate technology field.
