[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] A couple in their 30s was arrested on charges of abandoning their newborn baby, who was only three days old and had not been registered for birth, at a postpartum care center and then disappearing.
Jeju Police Agency announced on the 22nd that they had arrested Mr. A, a man in his 30s in a common-law relationship, and Ms. B, a woman in her 30s, on charges of violating the Child Welfare Act (child abandonment and neglect).
They are accused of abandoning their second son, C, who was three days old, at a postpartum care center in Jeju City on March 6.
The postpartum care center repeatedly tried to contact the couple, but they never came to pick up C. Consequently, the center reported the case to the police on April 26. The couple ignored police summons, and after an eight-month search, the police apprehended Mr. A and Ms. B in Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi Province, on the 19th.
Police investigations revealed that in October 2019, they had also abandoned their first child at a postpartum care center in Jeju City without registering the birth and disappeared. Due to this incident, Ms. B had already been indicted for violating the Child Welfare Act and was awaiting her first trial.
Currently, the couple’s two children remain unregistered for birth. The first child is living with Mr. A’s family, and the second child is being cared for by a social welfare facility.
