Samyang Corporation Joins Global Consortium to Enter European Allulose Market
Formation of Allulose Novel Food Consortium (ANFC) for EU and UK Market Entry
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] Samyang Corporation has partnered with global food ingredient companies to target the European food market.
Samyang announced on the 6th that it has joined a global consortium to promote the approval of allulose in Europe.
The consortium, named the Allulose Novel Food Consortium (ANFC), includes global food companies such as Cosun Beet, Ingredion, and Matsutani Chemical, in addition to Samyang.
This consortium aims to facilitate the entry of allulose into the EU and UK markets. ANFC plans to submit a joint application to the European Commission and the UK Food Standards Agency to approve allulose as a Novel Food. Novel Food is a system that recognizes consumption and use in food after a safety assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for foods that have no history of consumption within Europe.
Currently, allulose is approved as a food ingredient in countries such as Korea, the United States, Japan, and Mexico, and there are other countries and regions where approval is underway. After obtaining European approval for allulose, ANFC plans to pursue the exclusion of allulose from sugar labeling within the European region. Currently, in the Korean and US markets, allulose is excluded from sugar labeling, and the allulose market continues to grow following the trend of sugar reduction.
A Samyang official stated, “We expect that close cooperation with global companies will save time and costs for the registration and approval of allulose as a Novel Food,” adding, “EU approval positively influences obtaining approval from other international organizations, so we will accelerate allulose’s global market entry by using European approval as a stepping stone.”

Allulose is a sweet component found in figs and grapes that provides sweetness similar to sugar but with almost zero calories, making it known as the next-generation alternative sweetener. Samyang succeeded in commercializing allulose with its own technology in 2016 and is currently focusing on expanding its global entry foundation through global promotional activities and discovering business and distribution partnerships.
