Gangdong-gu Opens Seoul's First 'Children's Restaurant'
On the 30th of last month, Seoul City opened its first children's cafeteria, providing local children with a healthy meal... Offering high-quality meals for 2,500 won to children in the meal blind spot, solving parents' concerns
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) opened the ‘Gangdong Children's Cafeteria’ on the 30th of last month.
Located in Amsa-dong, the ‘Gangdong Children's Cafeteria’ is the first children's cafeteria directly operated by a local government in the country.
It provides a delicious and nutritious dinner for only 2,500 won to children who have difficulty having a proper meal due to challenging economic conditions or both parents working.
The space is about 40 pyeong (approximately 132 square meters) and can accommodate up to 30 people at a time. It operates every Monday to Friday from 4 PM to 8 PM. Any child aged 6 to 15 residing in Gangdong-gu or attending elementary or middle schools located in Gangdong-gu can use the facility.
Situated on the 2nd floor at 321 Gucheonmyeon-ro, the ‘Gangdong Children's Cafeteria’ is equipped not only with a kitchen and dining area but also a playroom and community room, expected to help fill the care gap for vulnerable groups and dual-income families. When the cafeteria is not operating, the space can be rented for use as a local community space.
In addition to food, educational and cultural programs are also offered, providing children with opportunities to naturally interact and play with peers during their stay. The initial programs include '1:1 Children's Nutrition Class,' which teaches children proper eating habits, and 'I am a Chef,' where children can make seasonal dishes.
After a one-month pilot operation following its opening, the ‘Gangdong Children's Cafeteria’ plans to comprehensively analyze menus, nutrition, and member satisfaction, address any issues, and officially operate from 2022.
