This is Sohn's fourth attempt at the presidency. Previously, in the 17th and 18th presidential elections, after leaving the Grand National Party, he ran as a candidate in the presidential primaries of the Grand Unified Democratic New Party and the Democratic United Party, but finished in second place both times. In the 19th presidential election, he participated in the presidential primary of the People's Party but was defeated by leader Ahn Cheol-soo.
