Regional Forums Held to Prepare the 'National Education Committee Enforcement Decree'
Online Live Broadcast from the 30th to December 10th
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Ministry of Education and the National Education Council announced on the 29th that they will hold regional forums to prepare the enforcement decree of the National Education Committee Act, which covers the functions and roles of the National Education Committee and the national curriculum.
This regional forum was organized to gather opinions from various sectors from the drafting stage of the enforcement decree (draft), in line with the founding purpose of the National Education Committee, which is to promote education policies based on social consensus.
The draft enforcement decree presented at the regional forums was prepared together with various educational stakeholders by the National Education Council. To ensure sufficient opinion gathering, the National Education Council expanded the 'Special Committee for the Establishment Support of the National Education Committee' from being mainly composed of professors and teachers to include youth, students, parents, and representatives from civic groups. The number of members in the Special Committee for the Establishment Support of the National Education Committee also increased from 14 to 31.
At the regional forums, members of the Special Committee for the Establishment Support of the National Education Committee will present the draft enforcement decree prepared by the National Education Council. Discussions will be held together with teachers, parents, students, and experts from the relevant regions recommended by related organizations such as the National Association of Provincial and Metropolitan Superintendents of Education, the Korean Council for University Education, the Korean Council for College Education, and the Council of Governors of the Republic of Korea.
The National Education Committee is scheduled to be established in July next year. The members of the National Education Committee will consist of students enrolled in elementary, middle, and high schools at the time of appointment; youth aged 19 to 34 at the time of appointment; parents with children enrolled in elementary, middle, high schools, and universities at the time of appointment; and individuals recommended by teacher organizations. If any occupational group exceeds 30%, the National Assembly or the President may reappoint members exceeding the quota.
Considering the COVID-19 situation, the forums will be broadcast live online in real time, allowing any citizen to watch and express their opinions. Related materials about the National Education Committee can be found on the website.
