[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] The '2021 Seoul Mobility Show' opened its opening ceremony on the 26th, kicking off a ten-day schedule.
Held at KINTEX Exhibition Hall 2, Halls 9 and 10, in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, the Seoul Mobility Show features 100 companies and organizations from six countries worldwide in the fields of complete vehicle brands, parts, and mobility. It is sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Goyang City, and KOTRA.
The opening ceremony was attended by Jeong Manki, Chairman of the 2021 Seoul Mobility Show Organizing Committee, Park Jin-gyu, 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Lee Kwang-hyung, President of KAIST, Lee Hwa-young, President of KINTEX, along with representatives from the complete vehicle industry and related officials.
At the opening ceremony, Chairman Jeong emphasized, "From internal combustion engine vehicles to various mobility types, from business-to-consumer (B2C) to business-to-business (B2B), and from complete vehicle-centered to technology-centered, we will transform and rise as Asia's representative global mobility exhibition."
Chairman Jeong stated, "The automobile industry is currently undergoing a major transformation," adding, "The direction of this transformation is electric-powered vehicles, autonomous vehicles, the spread of various new mobilities, and the emergence of mobility as a service."
Jeong Manki, the organizing chairman, explained, "The mobility industry is expanding from automobiles to urban air mobility (UAM), robots, drones, and the popularization of mobility as a service (MaaS) will also be strengthened. Thanks to algorithms and machine learning, AI is being utilized, leading to the emergence of platform operators in various areas such as taxi use, parking management, car washing, and maintenance, causing a major innovation. According to Samjong KPMG, the market size for car-sharing services alone is expected to exceed $3.3 trillion by around 2040."
He continued, "The Seoul Mobility Show will be reborn by transforming from internal combustion engine-centered to various mobility types, and from complete vehicle-centered to technology-centered, promoting technological innovation in the industrial ecosystem."
Vice Minister Park Chan-gyu said, "To become a first mover leading the future mobility industry, extraordinary efforts from our industry and government are necessary," adding, "The government will spare no policy support to ensure that our automobile industry becomes a first mover in eco-friendly and digital transformation."
He emphasized, "We will strengthen research and development (R&D) support to secure core future vehicle technologies," and "We will steadily build infrastructure, laws, and systems related to future vehicles."
President Lee Kwang-hyung said, "Developing eco-friendly transportation technologies and building related infrastructure is a great opportunity for Korea to leap forward," adding, "When autonomous driving, drones, and unmanned carriers become commonplace, a mobility revolution surpassing smartphones will come."

He further urged, "To proactively respond to changes, exemplary industrial innovation and industry-academia cooperation are necessary," and "Close cooperation among industry, academia, government, and local governments is even more important."
