Government Holds First Meeting of '2030 Busan Expo' Bid Committee... Total Mobilization of Government Capabilities
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Haeyoung] On the morning of the 19th, the government held the 1st meeting of the '2030 Busan World Expo Hosting Support Committee' at the Government Seoul Office, chaired by Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum.
The World Expo is one of the three major international events alongside the Olympics and the World Cup. If Busan hosts the 2030 World Expo, South Korea will become the 12th country in the world to host a registered Expo and the 7th country to have hosted all three major international events. The Busan World Expo is a 'Registered Expo' certified by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), whereas the Daejeon and Yeosu World Expos were 'Recognized Expos' that bypassed the BIE certification process.
The Support Committee reviewed the status of the 2030 Busan World Expo bid during the meeting.
First, through the 'Domestic Preparation Status and Future Plans for the 2030 Busan World Expo Bid,' they discussed the preparation status and future plans for major bidding activities such as the competitive presentation (PT) at the December BIE General Assembly, the official bid submission in May next year, and the on-site inspection in September of the same year.
They also reviewed the government's role in sending a pan-governmental support letter to strongly express the government's firm intention to host, strengthening support to secure backing from developing country members of the BIE, expanding support activities by high-ranking government officials, enhancing bidding capabilities, and developing the hosting site and Expo grounds.
Furthermore, they shared trends of competing countries (Russia, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Ukraine), the status of support negotiations so far, and each country's reactions, and discussed plans to establish a support system for bid negotiations centered on overseas diplomatic missions and to actively carry out bidding negotiation activities.
