Over 400 Waiting for Hospital Beds in the Seoul Metropolitan Area Amid Rising COVID-19 Cases
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] As the number of new COVID-19 cases in South Korea continues to rise daily, the number of people waiting for hospital bed allocation in the Seoul metropolitan area has exceeded 400.
According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters of the Ministry of Health and Welfare on the 18th, the number of people waiting for hospital bed allocation in the metropolitan area, which was zero at the time of the phased transition to daily recovery on the 1st of this month, increased to 423 as of midnight on the same day. Among the 423 people, 367 are waiting for hospital transfer, and 56 are waiting for allocation to residential treatment centers.

Looking at the daily number of people waiting for hospital bed allocation in the metropolitan area, there were no cases from the 1st to the 3rd of this month, but 2, 1, and 7 cases occurred on the 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively. From the 7th to the 10th, the number was in the 20s to 30s, then increased to 79 on the 11th and reached triple digits at 116 on the 12th. Afterwards, it was 251 on the 14th, 273 on the 14th, 227 on the 16th, and 263 on the 1st, showing numbers in the 200s, and as of midnight on this day, it exceeded 400. Most of the people waiting for bed allocation need to be transferred to hospitals.
