Chairpersonship of Assemblywoman Jo Yeong-im
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangsan District Council of Gwangju Metropolitan City (Chairman Lee Young-hoon) announced on the 18th that it held a meeting on the 17th to explore ways to revitalize gender equality education.
The meeting, chaired by Gwangsan District Council member Jo Young-im (Hanam-dong, Cheomdan 1·2-dong, Bia-dong, Imgok-dong), was organized to review the current status of gender equality education and share the necessity of gender equality education prior to the enactment of an ordinance to promote gender equality education.
About 10 people attended the meeting, including Council member Jo, Park Kyung-shin, Chair of the Industrial City Committee, Council members Guk Kang-hyun and Lee Gui-soon, Kim Eun-young, Manager of the Gwangju Women and Family Foundation, Shin Hye-yeon, Director of the Gwangsan Gender Culture Center, Hong Hyun-ja, President of Cheomdan Salon Yeomunson, a Wonder activist from the Gwangju Women Minwoo Association Education Center, and related officials.
The attendees unanimously agreed that although the four major violence prevention education programs are mandatory and legally grounded, they focus on victim prevention or response and thus cannot prevent the occurrence of sexual violence. They emphasized the need for gender equality education that can enhance gender sensitivity.
They further stressed that true prevention can be achieved by improving gender stereotypes and changing gender culture norms starting from the family and community levels through gender equality education.
Council member Jo said, “Although gender violence prevention education has increased since the Me Too movement, it has been limited to violence prevention education for public officials, school staff, and youth, and specific education on gender equality has been lacking. Through the revitalization of gender equality education, we will raise gender sensitivity and create concrete and practical ordinances that can promote gender human rights.”
