[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Shin Dong-ho] Among the various welfare policies promoted by Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Seo Dae-seok), the ‘Visiting Sign Language School’ is receiving great responses from residents.

According to Seo-gu on the 17th, the number of registered hearing and speech-impaired persons in Seo-gu amounts to 2,184, which is 15.6% of the total 13,723 disabled persons.

Accordingly, Seo-gu is operating the ‘Learning with Fingertips, Dialogue of Love Visiting Sign Language School’ to improve awareness of hearing and speech disabilities, and under their interest and participation, the fourth course of this year is already underway.

The 4th term of the Sign Language School held at Ssangchon Comprehensive Social Welfare Center auditorium started on September 28 and will run until the 30th of this month. A professional instructor with a national certified sign language interpreter qualification has been invited to conduct 10 sessions, each lasting one hour every Tuesday.

The participants are civil service workers in charge of civil affairs who respond to information services for hearing and speech-impaired persons having communication difficulties, as well as residents interested in sign language.

Currently, the program is receiving positive responses among civil service workers at the administrative welfare centers of Sangmu 1 and 2-dong, Hwajeong 1, 2, 3, and 4-dong, and Ssangchon Health Support Center, as well as workers and residents of Ssangchon Comprehensive Social Welfare Center.

Seo-gu has shown great interest in welfare for minority disabled persons by operating basic sign language education for public officials twice last year and once in the first half of this year.

A Seo-gu official said, “We will continue to discover and promote various policies so that minority disabled persons can live without inconvenience, striving to create a people-centered Seo-gu where no one is left behind.”
