CJ CheilJedang Accelerates Startup Investments for Future Growth
Establishes 'Tech Bridge Team' in Bio Business Following Food Sector
Will Continue Investments to Equip 'Innovation DNA' for Future Preparation
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] CJ CheilJedang is expanding strategic investments for future growth. While it has mainly made investments through the group's venture capital Timewise Investment, it will form a specialized team this year to make direct investments. This is to understand rapidly evolving technologies and trend changes from a business perspective and to proactively secure future growth engines by strengthening synergy with existing businesses.
CJ CheilJedang announced on the 17th that it has invested in 10 domestic and international startups and U.S.-based alternative protein specialized funds since the beginning of this year.
The newly invested global startups include Miyoko's Creamery, Plentable, and Shiok Meats, companies related to future alternative foods. Additionally, it has invested in Unovis, the largest global alternative protein specialized fund, to monitor market trends and promote investment and collaboration with promising startups.
For domestic startups, it has invested in various food sectors such as Carewith and Reharvest to seek collaboration opportunities with existing businesses. Furthermore, through the startup discovery and nurturing program "Frontier Labs," which collaborates with the global accelerator SparkLabs since June, it plans to make additional follow-up investments after the demo day for selected companies including Itgreen, Eloilab, and Better Monday.
An internal dedicated team has also been formed to enhance investment expertise and execution capabilities. After establishing the "New Frontier Team" in April and achieving various investment results in the domestic and international food sectors within half a year, the "Tech Bridge Team" was newly created in September within the bio business division, investing in the Irish biotechnology company Nuritas. With the in-house specialized team in place, CJ CheilJedang plans to accelerate discovering and investing in promising startups in the food and bio sectors, securing external innovative technologies, and collaborating on technology.
