The Miracle of Sharing That Fills Itself Daily... Do You Know the Kind Refrigerator Where Love Blooms?
Yangcheon-gu Sinjeong 3-dong, Shared Refrigerator Open to All for Donations and Sharing to Support Vulnerable Groups Operating Since July... A Miracle Fridge Filled Daily with Warm Community Donations from Cash to Homegrown Vegetables, Fruits, Eggs, and Cup Noodles
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] “Isn't it amazing to have a refrigerator that magically fills itself every day? Just looking at it makes my heart feel full!”
Lee Su-mi, who serves as the private chairperson of the Sinjeong 3-dong Community Security Council in Yangcheon-gu, said this while gazing at the Good Refrigerator, now filled with food donated by residents.
Since July, the Sinjeong 3-dong Resident Center in Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Kim Soo-young) has been operating the “Good Refrigerator Where Love Blooms,” a project where anyone can freely donate and share food, in collaboration with the local community security council.
The “Good Refrigerator Where Love Blooms” was planned with the purpose of creating a community that shares warmth with neighbors and cares for those in need through voluntary food donations from residents.
The Sinjeong 3-dong Community Security Council and the Volunteer Camp Good Family Volunteer Group have taken the lead in organizing donated items and managing hygiene, creating a shared refrigerator operated autonomously by local residents.
The Good Refrigerator is open on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. With about 20 users daily, approximately 400 people use the refrigerator each month, receiving explosive support from the local community.
As the project’s good intentions spread by word of mouth, beautiful donation stories for the Good Refrigerator have increased. Recently, Mr. Kim, a resident of Sinjeong 3-dong, donated 1 million won in cash, and Mr. Heo promised regular ramen donations.
The spirit of sharing from local residents continues unabated. Some leave vegetables grown in their autumn gardens, while a resident who visited secretly filled it with eggs and warm soup considering the nutrition of the elderly. On another day, cup noodles, a handy snack for children needing care, were placed inside. Fresh fruit, carefully packaged and sent from a nearby church, also added warmth to the Good Refrigerator.
Through listening to and warmly embracing the stories of residents using the Good Refrigerator, 37 households in welfare blind spots due to crisis situations were discovered, and necessary welfare benefits were connected, achieving meaningful results.
Mr. Kim, an elderly resident of Sinjeong 3-dong who frequently uses the Good Refrigerator, said, “The Good Refrigerator is truly playing a vital role for neighbors in need,” giving a thumbs-up repeatedly.
