[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) held the 2021 second half regular general meeting of the ‘Seoul Metropolitan Government Northeast Area Fashion and Sewing Industry Development Council’ (hereinafter referred to as the Council) on the 8th to seek revival plans for the sewing industry, which is facing a crisis due to the impact of COVID-19.
The nine autonomous districts in the northeast area of Seoul, where small business owners are concentrated?Jongno-gu, Jung-gu, Seongdong-gu, Gwangjin-gu, Dongdaemun-gu, Jungnang-gu, Seongbuk-gu, Gangbuk-gu, and Dobong-gu?along with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Small Business Research Institute, gathered to engage in in-depth discussions on what support policies are most needed for clothing manufacturing companies.
In addition, a heated debate continued on solutions to pressing issues such as the current state of fabric waste disposal, recycling methods, establishment of collection systems, and institutional improvements, which increase the cost burden on sewing companies and are identified as sources of environmental pollution.
Through the discussions, the nine autonomous districts belonging to the Development Council agreed to carry out a service project to develop solutions for joint responses to fabric waste disposal.

Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu and chairman of the Council, emphasized, “Through this service project jointly implemented by the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the nine autonomous districts in the northeast area, we expect to find a clue to solving the long-standing problem of fabric waste disposal.”
